Neighborhood Insights: North Limestone

Historic, charming, and an embodiment of the Lexington Spirit – The North Limestone Community sits just north of main street in downtown Lexington, KY.

Due to rapid growth in Lexington, many of the great gifts of this community have been lost to the public eye. However, the non-profit organization – North Limestone Community Development Corporation – works to revitalize this area.

Now, the NoLi Neighborhood is home to some of Lexington’s greatest artist attractions, local eateries, and fun family entertainment! Recently, Rector Hayden members Whitney Baxter and June Laves stopped by one of NoLi’s main events: The Night Market / Mercado Bajo La Luna.

mercadobajolaluna

“The Night Market is a monthly pop-up street festival that helps businesses, artists, and non-profits from the North Limestone Corridor reach new audiences. [-nolicdc.org]”

Food trucks and local breweries lined the ends of the market, which takes place at the intersection of Bryan Avenue and Limestone.  This portion of the road is shut down to traffic and turned into a pedestrian market for the evening.

A stage is set up against the old materials warehouse where live music is performed throughout the evening.  We were delighted to see that the night’s particular band allowed children on stage to jam out with them!

Vendors and stalls of crafts and wares are setup along both sides.  Priority placement is given first to local residents and businesses, as the night market’s goal is to help invigorate the community – but vendors from all over are welcome to sign up and participate.  Beautiful organic plants and garden starters from a local green thumb – you can see an intrigued pooch considering the selection of herbs and ferns.  Kentucky for Kentuckyhttp://www.kyforky.com/ ], sells chic clothing and gifts that, “highlight the complex identity of our state.”

Derby 2016 – The Most Exciting 2 Minutes of the Year!!

“This Kentucky Derby, whatever it is—a race, an emotion, a turbulence, an explosion—is one of the most beautiful and violent and satisfying things I have ever experienced.”
—John Steinbeck

Every year, the first Saturday in May is a grand festival and celebration for – not just Kentuckians – but folks from all over the world.  While the Derby events themselves are typically held in Louisville, KY at the Churchill Downs track; Lexingtonians still celebrate the day by enjoying festivities at our own tracks: Keeneland and Red Mile.

A weekend of bourbon, mint juleps, hot browns, big hats, and betting – and a celebration of a long held tradition for our nation.  The Kentucky Derby has ben run since 1875, making it one of the longest held annual sporting events in the United States.  Historically, the Derby has been integral to civil rights movements, tourism, international horse racing culture,  and more.  We’re proud to hold such an amazing celebration in the Commonwealth year after year.

We hope that everyone celebrates safely – sings “My Old Kentucky Home” at the top of their lungs – and enjoys this weekend’s Run for the Roses!

10 Facts About the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a major festival and celebration – not just for Kentuckians

1. The first Kentucky Derby was run in 1875.

001

2. The name “Run for the Roses” was coined by a columnist, New York sports columnist Bill Corum, in 1925 writing about the event and referencing the blanket of roses draped on the winning horse.

002

3. In 1970, Diane Crump became the first woman to ride in the Derby.

003

4. Only 6 women have ridden in the famed “Run for the Roses”: Diane Crump, Patti Cooksey, Andrea Seefeldt, Julie Krone, Rosemary Homeister and Rosie Napravnik.

010

5. The Kroger Company has been the official florist of the Kentucky Derby since 1987. After taking over the duties from the Kingsley Walker florist, Kroger began constructing the prestigious garland in one of its local stores for the public to view on Derby Eve.

The event will take place on Friday, May 6th, at the Middletown Kroger store located at 12501 Shelbyville Road, in Louisville, KY. The best time for visitors to see the crafting of this year’s Garland will be from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Derby Eve. Last year, more than 6,000 people came to see this all-night event.

007

6. The Rose Garland on average weighs 40 pounds!

011

7. Age is Just A Number: Alonzo “Lonnie” Clayton was the youngest jockey in Derby history to win a race. He was 15 years old when he won in 1892. The oldest jockey to win was Willie Shoemaker, who won the 1986 race at age 54.

005

8. The Derby is routinely held on the First Saturday of May

006

9. Take That Cloudy Skies! No Derby has ever been postponed due to weather!

Sell-a-Bration 2016

Our annual awards kick-off breakfast and selling tools seminar!!

Each year, Rector Hayden is always amazed at the hard work and success our agents show.  It’s enough that we host our annual SELL-A-BRATION Breakfast!  A ceremonious time where we commune with each other, honor successes, and set new goals for the year to come.

Whitney prepares for the morning

This year we were gracious to host our celebration at The Signature Club at Lansdowne in their beautiful banquet hall.  Sha and Keith led the ceremonies as well as great speakers presented.  Gary Krause from HMS Home Warranty and Aaron Mason of Rector-Hayden Mortgage each spoke and honored agents that had success with their services.

Diane Williams wins the trip to Grove Park Inn!!Announcing the winner of the giveaway!

Last year, Donna Williams – Manager, announced our Grove Park Inn Getaway Giveaway!  Each time an agent represented a closing, they were given an entry into the contest!  Brad Devries, our CEO, randomly selected a winner from over a few thousand tickets.  Diane Williams, of our Georgetown office, was our lucky winner for the paid vacation!

One of the best festivities of Sell-a-Bration is honoring all of our newest members! Which we do by having them stand up in front of everyone and sing a song!!
